Updating Boiler Room Gas Detection Equipment for Qualia Care Homes

Ammonia is composed of Nitrogen and Hydrogen and at room temperature, it is a colourless gas and an irritant with a pungent odour. It’s one of the most common industrial chemicals and is both very toxic and flammable with an LEL of 16%. Ammonia is highly irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. It can cause burning sensations, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to lung damage, chemical burns, and even fatality.

Care providers Qualia Care needed to update their boiler room gas detection equipment in several of their care homes.1 When the project went out to tender, we were able to offer an effective and reliable system. Which resulted in a much lower price point than competing gas detection manufacturers, thus securing the contract for the work. Read on to find out more about the solution we designed, and how our 2-Wire Addressable technology can offer significant reductions in installation costs vs competing systems.

Gas Detection Equipment for Boiler Rooms

Qualia Care is an independent social care provider in the north of England. They required a large-scale update of their existing boiler room gas detection equipment in over 18 of their care homes; to ensure that these facilities continued to provide the highest levels of safety for residents and staff.

Boiler plant rooms can vary drastically depending on the type of facility being heated. So, when it comes to gas detection equipment for gas-fired boiler rooms, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.2 Typical boiler room installations may include leak detection for natural gas (methane), LPG, or other fuel gas; with the possibility of including CO or CO2 detectors where combustion products are an issue.

In this instance, the care homes belonging to Qualia Care required carbon monoxide and methane detection systems, ranging between 1-3 and 1-5 channel systems. IGD proposed a system based on our 2-Wire Addressable Technology in conjunction with 635 MICRO control panels.

2-Wire Addressable Gas Detection Systems

Our 2-Wire addressable technology enables devices to be connected using a single two core cable for both power and communication, with no polarity requirements. Each detector in one of our  2-Wire systems has input and output capability. This provides increased flexibility to add additional controls or audible visual alarms from the nearest detector. However, the primary advantage of our 2-Wire addressable technology in many cases – including this one – is the drastically reduced installation and cabling costs. Because power and signals are both transmitted down the same cable pair, our systems typically offer a 70% cost saving on installation compared to less sophisticated systems on the market.

Our proposed systems for Qualia Care each make use of our compact TOCSIN 635 MICRO control panels. The TOCSIN 635 MICRO is built with usability in mind, featuring our ground-breaking one-click auto system setup. This feature is an industry first, enabling onsite facilities companies to commission the system themselves with the click of a button without any prior knowledge in gas detection. Perfect for applications such as Qualia’s care homes boiler rooms.3

The 635 MICRO also features a built-in Slam Switch/E-Stop, removing the need to fit additional switches. This drastically reducing cost and eradicating errors on commissioning. An illuminated interface and intuitive jog-wheel control ensures that the system is simple for all staff to operate, and system status can be easily viewed at a glance.

Bespoke Gas Detection Solutions from International Gas Detectors

As well as our TOCSIN control panels, the Qualia Care system makes use of our long-life CO and flammable sensors to ensure reliable and accurate monitoring of both target gases. The result of all of these components is a straightforward simple-to-use solution for Qualia Care’s care homes. Thus offering reliable and safe performance at a much lower price point than other competitive systems.

International Gas Detectors provide bespoke gas detection equipment solutions for any application, no matter the requirements. To find out more about what we can do for your organization, read about some of our completed projects here, or get in touch with us.
