Chlorine Dioxide (CLO2) Gas Monitors for Water Treatment

Ammonia is composed of Nitrogen and Hydrogen and at room temperature, it is a colourless gas and an irritant with a pungent odour. It’s one of the most common industrial chemicals and is both very toxic and flammable with an LEL of 16%. Ammonia is highly irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. It can cause burning sensations, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to lung damage, chemical burns, and even fatality.

Chlorine Dioxide is a popular water treatment solution in various industries. It has great disinfectant and oxidising qualities making it highly effective in water treatment. However, with this gas comes its dangers as it is highly toxic, making it a potential hazard for these industries. Implementing ClO₂ gas monitors is an efficient and effective way to mitigate these hazards.

Do you use ClO2 in your industry? Do you know the dangers of this gas?

ClO₂ Applications

Water treatment is essential in a wide variety of industries for a range of purposes. Chlorine dioxide is highly effective and safe to use for the purpose of treating drinking water to make it fit for purpose. ClO2 is also widely used in hospitality and leisure applications, such as in hotels for disinfecting swimming pools and hot tubs, as well as for keeping water parks clean. Other applications include:

  • Food and Beverage production
  • Environmental Hygiene
  • Cooling towers
  • Wastewater
  • Effluent treatment

One of the reasons it is preferred over other disinfectants in these applications is because it is only needed in small doses to work effectively. Additionally, ClO2 does not react with organic materials to form Trihalomethanes (THMs), unlike Chlorine, thus making it massively beneficial in the creation of drinking water. ClO2 effectively controls microbiological growth and biofilms in industrial cooling waters, making it favourable over other disinfectants such as Chlorine.

Due to its reactivity, Chlorine Dioxide photolyzes rapidly in the atmosphere and will breakdown in natural water quickly. Thus, although it is naturally environmentally hazardous, it will not last long in nature. All of these benefits make Chlorine Dioxide massively beneficial in water treatment, and therefore is often chosen over other water treatment solutions. But naturally, with its benefits also come the hazards, requiring the implementation of a Chlorine Dioxide gas monitor.

The Hazards of ClO2

Chlorine Dioxide is a highly toxic gas at room temperature. It can be identified with its reddish-yellow colour and its pungent, chlorine-like odour. If a leak occurs, personnel within the vicinity can quickly become overexposed to this substance, as the STEL is as low as 0.3ppm. Overexposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, with severe cases causing chronic bronchitis and pulmonary edema. Due to the extensive hazards attached to this gas, it is vital that personnel are equipped with the proper mitigation devices, such as Chlorine Dioxide gas monitors.

Mitigating the Hazard with Chlorine Dioxide Gas Monitors

International Gas Detectors have been manufacturing gas detection equipment for over 100 years, giving us the expertise and experience to provide detectably better Chlorine Dioxide gas monitors.

TOC-750 Safe Area Detector

The TOC-750 Safe Area detector is a versatile and advanced solution. Utilising IGD’s ground-breaking 2-Wire addressable technology, both power and communication are provided over a 2-core cable highway. Saving 70% on installation in comparison to similar models on the market. The TOC-750 detector features a unique sensor labyrinth design and can be fitted with splash guards. So, it is perfectly suited for water treatment applications, as accidental water splashes will not affect the sensor’s performance.
