Sampling Gas Detectors for Cleanroom Applications

Ammonia is composed of Nitrogen and Hydrogen and at room temperature, it is a colourless gas and an irritant with a pungent odour. It’s one of the most common industrial chemicals and is both very toxic and flammable with an LEL of 16%. Ammonia is highly irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. It can cause burning sensations, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to lung damage, chemical burns, and even fatality.

[vc_row][vc_column][cws_sc_text]Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd is a world-leading manufacturer of biopharmaceuticals and generic medicines. They operate the largest fully integrated manufacturing and delivery network in the pharmaceutical industry, producing over one billion doses of sterile injectable drugs annually.1 We (IGD) were asked to provide a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection system suitable for deployment in Teva’s aseptic cleanroom. In this article, we take a look at the important considerations that must be made when installing gas detection equipment in a cleanroom environment, and how we were able to overcome these obstacles using sampling gas detectors.

The most important consideration was, of course, cleanliness. Pharmaceutical cleanrooms are meticulously designed for their purpose, and any additional equipment introduced into a cleanroom must be compatible with existing cleanliness standards and cleaning procedures.4 Any surface in a cleanroom is a potential site for airborne particles to accumulate, so a standard wall-mounted gas detector represents a potential dirt- or bug-trap, both of which are of course unacceptable within a cleanroom.5 The solution we opted for had to be easily cleanable, with as small a surface area as possible.
