The Top 10 Features of Our New MK8 Flammable Gas Sensor

Ammonia is composed of Nitrogen and Hydrogen and at room temperature, it is a colourless gas and an irritant with a pungent odour. It’s one of the most common industrial chemicals and is both very toxic and flammable with an LEL of 16%. Ammonia is highly irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. It can cause burning sensations, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to lung damage, chemical burns, and even fatality.

Top 10 Features of our New MK8 Flammable Gas Sensor

Fixed flammable gas sensors play a vital role in industry; keeping personnel safe and protecting vital assets. And when searching for a flammable gas sensor, it can be overwhelming with the number of choices available on the market. This blog post gives you a run down of the top 10 features of our latest flammable gas sensor, the MK8 pellistor, helping you in choosing the best solution for your team and business. Read on below to find out more.[/cws_sc_text][cws_sc_text]

1. Extreme Stability

At IGD, we have designed our latest flammable gas sensor to ensure extreme stability over its lifetime. Flammable gas sensors can be prone to drifting as a sensor ages, over exposure to flammable gases and vapours and contaminants. Over time, these factors can affect a poorly designed detector arrangement, causing it to drift into a false negative or positive reading. IGD have managed to mitigate this with the MK8 flammable gas sensor, resulting in typically less than 2% LEL drift per year of operation.[/cws_sc_text][cws_sc_text]

2. Most Poison Resistant Pellistor Gas Detector on the Market

Pellistors can become affected by poisons or inhibitors, such as silicone and lead based compounds. This can lead to the performance of Pellistors dropping significantly through their life, becoming inaccurate and needing a replacement. IGD’s best in class MK3 pellistor has led the way for poison resistance since the 1980’s significantly out performing all others. Our MK8 has managed to outperform even the MK3 flammable gas sensor under test conditions, offering market leading poison resistance over a long period of time. Typically, Industry standard tests only apply 10ppm poisoning agent for 40 minutes. IGD’s standard test requires 100ppm for 40 minutes to simulate real world conditions, 10x what the industry standard asks for. Our MK8 Pellistor continued to accurately respond to 50%LEL flammable gas even after 40 minutes exposure to the poisoning agent. Check out the graph below to see how the MK8 fared against the MK3 and our closest competitors.

3. Responds to Any Flammable Gas

Our MK8 flammable gas sensor is able to respond to any flammable gas with its Pellistor technology and can be calibrated for your specific gas requirements. For example, if you require hydrogen detection for your battery room, the MK8 flammable gas sensor can be calibrated specifically for this. Responding accurately to the chosen gas. This gives the MK8 huge flexibility, as it can perform reliably in pretty much any flammable gas application.

These gases include:

4. Long Life, Low-Cost Ownership

The MK8 can operate for up to 5 years, massively reducing costs due to the infrequency of replacements. Additionally, our MK8 flammable gas sensor is plug replaceable, meaning the stainless-steel housing can be retained when your sensor is end of life. Not only is this better for the environment, but this also provides clients a much lower cost of ownership. With the MK8 we only replace what’s needed.[/cws_sc_text][cws_sc_text]

5. Available in Wide Range of IGD Fixed Gas Detector Models

The MK8 flammable gas sensor is approved for ATEX zones 1 and 2 (explosive environments) and zone 21 and 22 (dust environments). If your application requires sampling, safe area or ATEX flammable gas detection, IGD can supply you with a detectably better solution. The MK8 can easily be implemented into the following IGD products:

Thus, the MK8 can be fitted into a wide range of industries and applications.

6. Maximum Resistance to Shock and Vibration

IGD Flammable gas sensors are designed to meet or exceed the requirements of  IEC/EN 60079-29-1 standard, ensuring that sensors will perform effectively a wide range of environments. IGD’S MK8 meets and exceeds the requirements of IEC/EN 60079-29-1, offering resistance to shock and vibration. Therefore, with the MK8 you can be certain that your flammable gas sensor is keeping your team safe effectively in the most demanding environments.[/cws_sc_text][cws_sc_text]

7. Unaffected by Humidity and Operates Over a Wide Temperature Range

One common drawback with some flammable gas sensors is the inability to operate in extreme temperatures or humidity. This is very inconvenient for applications where the sensor is subject to extremes of temperature. IGD have the solution in the MK8 flammable gas sensor, with the ability to operate in extreme environments and be largely unaffected by temperature and humidity.

8. Only Responds to Flammable Gases

With gas sensors, there is sometimes the possibility of cross interreference due to the similar chemical make of some gases. But with the MK8 flammable gas sensors, unique pellistor technology, it will only respond to flammable gases. Thus, if there is an area with flammable and toxic gas hazards, your flammable gas sensor will only react to the flammable hazard. Providing accurate and reliable flammable gas detection continuously.

9. Available on our 2-Wire Addressable Technology or on Analogue

The MK8 is available to all of our clients on our unique 2-Wire Addressable technology or on our classic 4-20mA system.

Our leading addressable technology provides clients with a 70% cost saving upon installation whilst increasing operational efficiency and security by 80%. Providing a massively cost effective and reliable system with any IGD 750 series model.

However, if you have an older 4-20mA system, there is no need to worry! IGD can provide the MK8 flammable gas sensor in our TOC-903-X5 detector head. Giving all clients the opportunity to add the most poison resistant flammable gas sensor on the market to their IGD system.[/cws_sc_text][cws_sc_text]
